A few days ago, Google started rolling out a new Penguin 3.0 update, which will continue to roll out for the new few weeks. So if you haven't seen any impact yet, you're not necessarily in the clear just yet.

What we know so far (confirmed by Google):

    - This update affects all of Google, worldwide
    - The rollout will occur over the next few weeks
    - For English search queries, it should affect about 1% of them, in other languages it will affect either more or less of them.
    - The rollout began on October 17th
    - They referred to this update as a "refresh" which may indicate that it's not as big as we may have initially thought.
    - The update should continue to penalize sites with bad backlink profiles, and potentially reward sites previously hit but have since cleaned up their backlink strategy

To me, this sounds like they are implementing some manual boosts to sites previously penalized which got things straightened out. I guess they could algorithmically go back and reevaluate the sites they penalized last time around, but I would suspect that they had their human search quality reviewers check them out.

What could be particularly big or small depending on how you look at it is that "1%". 1% could mean a small portion of tail terms, or it could mean the actual high volume head terms out there, which would have a tremendous impact on volume for sites currently ranking high for those terms.

I have not noticed the effect as so much as many other webmasters have. I have seen steady rise across all my projects but for one that droped slightly on friday, see screenshot below and this is despite people shouting about some 30 day filter rule nonsense!

You need to know what you are doing when it comes to link building and until people learn to build links and diversify it, they WILL ALWAYS fall into the penguin trap hole. From my experience though, unless you are a big corporation, you don't just get a manual boost, penguin is a filter and everytime it is refreshed you either fall into the bad drop box or you safely pass through.

I am still watching over my rankings and experiments but it is too early to see the extensive effect it will have over the SERPS.

I didn't get hit this time, but I sure got hit back in 2012, just like most people. I don't think the drama will be quite as crazy as it was back then, people were quitting IM and going back to working 9 to 5.

It's too soon to tell. Besides, we didn't really do anything that violated the rules so if our sites happen to be affected, the effects weren't that much. Our rankings are pretty much the same. During my last SEO audit, our SEO score rose a few notches higher even.

My sites have't been negatively affected by any of Google's updates or corrections. I moved up in the SERPs during the last couple of corrections. I didn't know that Google was unleashing a Penguin update. I'm not really concerned.
