There's been much hype around Ello lately. This social networking site packages itself as anti-Facebook. What separates it from the network it opposes is that it's complete advertising-free and will never sell user data to advertisers, something which FB is supposedly doing. For now, membership is invite-only but the site has already received 50,000 membership requests. They've grown so fast in so short a time.

I am not sure whether I'd want to be a member of this site. What I like about Facebook is that it helps promote our products and achieve our business goals. I don't think I'll be able to strike business deals with Ello. Maybe for personal reasons I'd use it but not for entrepreneurial undertakings.

What do you think about Ello? Are you willing to give this new SNS a shot?

Really? I do think it has its own benefits, but they're just not business-oriented. Maybe this site is great for people who want nothing to do with random tagging (a lot of businesses do that and I'm even guilty of doing this often using our Facebook account). The paid ads can also slow down your load time. Hostility toward Facebook is unnecessary, though.

I don't think the users at Facebook mind so much that their information is being sold because I'm sure they know of it already by now and the fact that they still aren't migrating in droves tells a lot about consumer behavior there. I think this could prove to be a nifty alternative but I honestly don't think their selling point is that strong, though I'm sure they will be able to carve a niche out for themselves eventually if they keep at it and make the right decisions.

I like the idea of Ello, but I'm just curious as to why the membership is on an invite-only basis. I would like to try it out. How do they gauge the people that they will invite to the social network? Is there a specific category?

Honestly, I hadn't heard of it.

As a consumer, I like the idea behind the site. Yes, I'm on Facebook, but I limit my activities there because I know I'm being watched. I have a business page, but I'm not overly aggressive with my marketing of that page online. I really have it for credibility purposes.
