Long tail keywords are known to boost traffic and increase the conversion rate of selling sites. The reason is that it's a more specific search term which will be used by a specifc target audience.

As I understand it an example would be that the keyword 'Internet marketing for authors' would attract writers who want to promote their books online, but those people are unlikely to visit content based around a short tail keyword like 'Internet marketing', which appears on millions of web pages.

I would be interested to know if you have a success story or can explain how you use. long tail keywords

Although, there is no success story in my mind. However, I simply say that as long tail keywords contains all the keywords in it, so when user search by any term, there are likely to be chances that the same keyword included in your long tail keyword.

Longtail keywords are great. Not enough people bother with them, though. Some people would much rather take months to rank a keyword with a few thousand searches than rank a bunch of smaller searcher much faster. And because there is so much competition, some people won't even get a keyword ranked at all, which is another good reason to start off with longtails, at least you'll be getting traffic while you wait.

Working with long tail keywords is a bit of a balancing act. They can be useful, but they can also be the bane of your existence if you get too carried away with them.

Generally speaking, with long tail keywords, it's easier to discern the users intent, and therefore target them properly with specific marketing messages. Also, people actively searching for very specific queries are typically more inclined to act on them, such as make a purchase or sign up for a service.

With higher volume terms, you really can't tell what frame of mind the user is in. Are they really in a shopping mode? Or is the person merely searching for some general information about the product or service for some other reason?

Yes, you can stand a better chance of ranking for various long tail terms with limited competition, but the balancing comes into play when you decide which keyword phrases to target with custom content and seo optimization efforts to rank high for them. It makes no sense to spend a lot of time and money trying to rank for some fringe tail term that only 5 people per month search for, for example.

well in as much as you are right with your observations on long tail keywords i still believe that using short keywords also could be very advantageous considering the fact that if you combine several short keywords then it could also help in bringing in more traffic to your site.

Personally, I don't bother much with long tail keywords. I still go with the short ones. However, it contains lots of words so you might get traffic to your website anyway.

I always come up with long tail keywords as i do marketing research for my small niche business. Compared to exact word keyword, long tail phrases are much focused and narrower but are much used by people in their search query on search engines.

The thing about long-tail keywords is that they dilute the redundancy in an article or piece of content. They're especially useful when you intend to use a keyword for your domain but someone already beat you to it. Using a long-tail keyword for your domain helps retain the keyword that you're aiming for.
