There is no direct role for both , but it actually works with the search engines in a different way. As per the new methodologies followed by Facebook, adding hash tags seems to be energize for search in facebook.

 

SMO is Social Media Optimization which means that you optimize your site in order to make it easy for people to share your pages to their social media networks so the more people sharing your content the more people will be able to reach your site and as a result increase the traffic that it gets. If your content is informative the chance that other sites will link to yours will be increase which means natural link building (what Google wants) and as a result better ranking on search engines. Additionally google and the other search engines have start taking account the popularity of a website on social media sites so the more popular a website is on social media sites the better for its ranking on search engines.
